First Inventors offers three master courses for teaching the aspiring inventor how to patent and monetize their invention. The courses are taught according to college course standards. Each course in the series builds upon the material learned in the previous course. Students will be required to take self-graded quizzes after each module and should obtain a 70% grade average to move onto the next course in the series. The self-graded quizzes are multiple choice questions with answers provided upon quiz completion.

COURSE 101: Introduction to Patents and Inventions

This first course in the series provides the foundational material upon which the other two courses are built upon. This course will teach you about intellectual property including trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets and patents. The majority of the content however is directed specifically to inventions and patents.  This course comprises 10 modules and 35 individual lessons and is designed to be completed in 20 – 24 hours over a 10 -12 day period.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, students will have an understanding of intellectual property, the different types of intellectual property, the differences among the different types of intellectual property, what a patent represents, the difference between an invention and a patent, what comprises United States patent law, the four steps required to obtain a United States patent, the patenting process, the costs associated with obtaining a United States patent, and the inventor’s rights after obtaining a United States patent.

COURSE 102: Beginning Your Creative Journey

This second course in the series focuses on teaching you how to recognize a problem, creating a solution for the problem, and evaluating the value of your invention.

This course will teach you how to property define a problem, the importance of user feedback in the inventing process, creating a Blue Ocean for your invention, and how to perform a patent search. This course comprises 16 modules and 45 individual lessons and is designed to be completed in 40 – 45 hours over a 30 – 35 day period.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to define a problem and create a solution which solves the defined problem, document their invention for patentability, understand the importance of a non-disclosure agreement for inventions, understand the concept of creating a Blue Ocean and value innovation for your invention, understand the importance of a patent search, how to perform a patent search, and understand and evaluate the financial risk for patenting an invention.

Course 103: Submitting Your First Patent Application 

This third course completes the course series and focuses on having you file a provisional patent application for your invention. With patent pending status completed, the steps necessary for monetizing your invention will be presented.  With patent pending status you are in a position to publicly disclose your invention to potential customers and distributors without the worry of having your invention compromised or copied in the United States without legal recourse for one year from your filing date.

This course comprises 10 modules and 35 individual lessons and is designed to be completed in 30 – 34 hours over a 15 – 20 day period.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, students will learn the differences between a provisional and non-provisional patent application, the advantages afforded to the inventor by filing a provisional patent application vs. filing a non-provisional patent application, the process of filing a provisional patent application for their invention, the costs associated with filing the non-provisional patent application, the importance of having filed a provisional patent application and the rights which you are now entitled to by having filed a provisional patent application, and the techniques to begin to monetize your invention in the market place.
